Families Caring Across Borders

How can transnational migrants care for their parents ‘back home’? In this talk, specific case studies are used to illustrate the effects of long distance, family history and government policy on migrants’ ability to participate in their family support network abroad.

About the Speaker

Cora V. Baldock (Drs. Ley; PhD Cant.; HonDUniv.Murdoch) is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Murdoch University, with previous academic appointments at ANU, the City University of New York, San Diego State University, Canterbury University (NZ) and Leiden University. She is a past-President of the Australian Sociological Association, and a past-member of the Australian Research Council. She has written extensively on paid and unpaid (volunteer) work of women, as well as the history of Australian and NZ sociology. Her experiences as a migrant, caring about her elderly parents and now her own daughter living abroad, motivated her contribution to the research described in this paper.
