Wild men, musicians and others in Hebrew manuscript art

Suzanne Wijsman will talk about her research on a 15th century illuminated Hebrew manuscript in the collection of the Bodleian Library, Oxford. This manuscript, an Ashkenazic siddur or daily prayer book, is a special example of Jewish medieval book art in that it has a large number of illuminated folios and decorated text, yet was not a commissioned work, having been produced instead in Germany in 1471 by its scribe and owner, Asher ben Yitzhaq, for his own family to use. Suzanne will discuss the iconography of this beautiful manuscript, including the preponderant musical theme in many illuminations, as well as some of its unusual features and their significance within the context of the historical period in which it was produced.

About the Speaker
Suzanne Wijsman is a cellist and senior lecturer in the School of Music, who holds both a BA and MA in Religion and Near Eastern studies in addition to her musical qualifications.
