Moving through tradition: Learning to dance in Bali
In this presentation Dr Jonathon McIntosh examines the teaching and learning of dance in Bali, Indonesia. Starting with Hobsbawm’s insight concerning ‘the invention of tradition’, he identifies how traditional Balinese dance evolves over time and as new generations of children learn the dances the tradition continues reinvented. To do this he considers how changes in technology, the impact of tourist dance performances, and decisions made at the island’s two tertiary dance institutions, influence the ways in which Balinese children move through tradition.
