File formats
The following document types are preferred for submitting files for the UWA Digital Thesis Repository:
- Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf)
- Microsoft Word (.doc)
The UWA Library will also accept and endeavour to convert the following file types:
- Adobe PageMaker (.pmd)
- Bitmap files (.bmp)
- GIF files (.gif)
- JPEG files (.jpg, .jpeg)
- Microsoft Excel (.xls)
- Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt)
- Plain text (.txt)
- PostScript files (.ps, .eps)
- TIFF files (.tif, .tiff)
- Web pages (.htm, .html)
If the file you submit cannot be converted, you may be contacted and asked to resubmit your thesis in either Microsoft Word (.doc) format or as a PDF file.
If your thesis is in a format which is not included on this list, the Library is unlikely to be able to convert it. You are strongly encouraged to submit your thesis in one of the formats listed.
Files and file names
To assist the Library to correctly compile your thesis, please consider using the following file structure and file naming convention:
- Combine as much of your work into one file as possible, including the title page, acknowledgements, table of contents, and chapters.
- You may choose to combine appendices into a second file, if appropriate.
- Label the file names appropriately and consistently, e.g. 01main.doc, 02appendices.doc.
- If you are a Macintosh user, please append the appropriate file extension to the end of the file name (e.g. ".doc" or ".txt").
The files and their contents should be listed in the section Thesis parts and copyright on the form Certification of final version of thesis, available from the Graduate Research School.
Document formatting
Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) contains several technologies which make the document more accessible to the visually disabled, and generally increase usability for everyone. The most important of these is the creation of bookmarks.
To allow the Library to create bookmarks (similar to a table of contents) in your digital thesis, you must use the heading styles available in Microsoft Word (e.g. Heading 1, Heading 2). You may wish to review the section Working with Microsoft Office 2000 Application Files in Adobe's Tips for making an accessible Adobe PDF file.
Theses should also be formatted in accordance with the guidelines for producing a print thesis.
Storage media
You may store the electronic master of your thesis on a variety of media for transport to the Graduate Research School.
- PC-formatted CD-ROM (recommended)
- PC-formatted 3 ¼ inch floppy disk(s) (recommended)
- PC-formatted Zip disk
- Compressed email attachment (e.g. zip file)
