What is CMO (Staff)?

Introduction

Course Materials Online (CMO) is the UWA Library’s reading list management system, which provides online access to course reading lists. It is accessible from any computer in the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Lists within CMO contain citations of recommended readings, with links to the full text online. Where the citation is for an item held in the library’s collections, the link will take you to the library catalogue where you can check whether the item is available.

A major feature of CMO is the ease of linking to full text course materials in the Library’s digital repository, which stores recommended readings and is managed by the University Library to support the teaching and learning activities of UWA staff and students.

While the majority of readings consist of scanned book chapters, journal articles, and hyperlinks to online publications and Web sites, lecturers can also include on their CMO list links to books, journals, and audiovisual materials in the Library’s collection.

The Library recommends that your CMO list contain only recommended readings. This will enable students to easily browse the list, as well as making the list easier for you to manage.

How does Course Materials Online benefit UWA staff?

Copyright
The Library manages copyright compliance on your behalf for items in the digital repository. We will determine whether copying and communicating a document falls within the limits allowed by Commonwealth copyright law. Because the CMO service is centralised, it is easier for the University to remain compliant with the Copyright Act, and reporting to the Copyright Agency is more manageable.

Scanning
The Library will copy and scan documents on your behalf, ensuring that students are delivered the best quality reproduction within the smallest possible file size. Documents can be digitised in colour.

WebCT
You are able to link to CMO lists and documents made available through CMO from your WebCT course. A guide is available to help you do this.

Remote access
You can manage your CMO list from campus, home or work.

How does Course Materials Online benefit your students?

Your digitised reading material is available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Documents will not "go missing" just before important assignments are due.

Remote access
Students can access documents from campus, home or work.

It's free!
Students can use the material online, without the need to photocopy or print to paper.

Keep it clean
Documents won't get torn, written on, or damaged as Semester progresses.

Sharing
Documents can be accessed by many students at once.

How do I add citations to my Course Materials Online list?

  • you can add a citation for an item directly from the Library catalogue or repository;
  • you can request the Library to locate and digitise a new item, and then add the citation, on your behalf.

More information managing your reading list is available.

What do I need to do if there are no changes to my list for the coming semester?

Your list and all the citations on it remain active every semester, however at the end of each semester the reserve collection is disbanded and items are put back into the main collection. Therefore, at the beginning of each semester, you should revise your reading list and make any additions/deletions as appropriate.

If there are no changes to your list, and the list includes physical items, the Library needs to be alerted regarding what is required for reserve. To do this, follow the instructions on how to submit an item for reserve.

Will all my unit's reading materials be available online?

Unfortunately, no. TheLibrary may not be able to digitise an item for technical reasons, or because Commonwealth copyright law will not allow it. As such, some resources will still be located in the Library’s physical Reserve Collection. Items in the Reserve Collection should still be listed in your unit’s CMO list. These materials include books, audiovisual materials, and some photocopies.

Course Readers
Course readers can be placed in Reserve at the request of a lecturer. Individual articles and extracts in readers may also be digitised and added to CMO.

More information about placing items in the Reserve Collection is available.

What will students need to access CMO?

Most documents linked from CMO will be either Web pages or PDF documents. Students will need Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on their home or work computer. Instructions are available via the Library's Downloading software viewers help page.

PDF documents will best be viewed using Adobe Reader version 6 or higher.
