Configure Windows Live Mail 2011 for student email

To access your UWA Student Email through Windows Live Mail 2011, you will need IMAP enabled.

Check IMAP is enabled

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Click on the cog icon at the top right corner of the mailbox and choose 'Settings' from the drop down menu.
  3. Click 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'.

  4. Select 'Enable IMAP'.
  5. Select 'Save Changes'.

Enabling Less Secure Apps

Before setting up your email program you will need to enable 'Less Secure Apps' using the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Go to the 'Less secure apps' settings page. Please note that this link will take you to an external website.
  3. Select the 'Turn on' radio button.

While some desktop clients don't follow all modern security standards, the risk is minimal when you are a savvy internet user. Please contact BYOD for further information.

Configuring Windows Live Mail 2011

Step one

Open Windows Live Mail 2011.

From the tool bar at the top select 'Accounts' and then click 'Email'.

Step 1

Enter the following details:

  • 'Email Address:' Your UWA Student Email address (ie. 12345678@student.uwa.edu.au).
  • 'Password:' Your Pheme password.
  • 'Your Name:' The name you want to appear on emails that you send.
  • Ensure the 'Manually configure server settings' box is checked.

Step two

Enter the following details:

Incoming server information

  • Server Type: IMAP
  • Server address: imap.gmail.com
  • Ensure the 'Port' is '993'
  • Check 'Requires a secure connection (SSL)'
  • Authenticate using: 'Secure Password Authentication'
  • Logon user name: Your UWA Student Email address, (i.e. 12345678@student.uwa.edu.au)

Check both of the Requires a secure connection (SSL) boxes.

Check the Requires Authentication box.

Outgoing server information

  • Server address: smtp.gmail.com
  • Ensure the 'Port' is '465'
  • Check 'Require a secure connection (SSL)'
  • Check 'Requires authentication'

Click Next.

You will see the following message:

Step 4

Your email will now begin downloading.
