Configure Thunderbird version 17 for Mac

Check IMAP is enabled

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Click on the cog icon at the top right corner of the mailbox and choose 'Settings' from the drop down menu.
  3. Click 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'.
    IMAP is enabled
  4. Select 'Enable IMAP'.
  5. Select 'Save Changes'.

Enabling Less Secure Apps

Before setting up your email program you will need to enable 'Less Secure Apps' using the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Go to the 'Less secure apps' settings page. Please note that this link will take you to an external website.
  3. Select the 'Turn on' radio button.

While some desktop clients don't follow all modern security standards, the risk is minimal when you are a savvy internet user. Please contact BYOD for further information.

Configuring Thunderbird 17.0

Step one

Open Thunderbird.

From the left hand side choose Local Folders and then select 'Create a new account'.

The select 'Skip this and use my existing email'.

Step two

On the 'Mail Account Setup' page, enter the following credentials:

  • 'Your Name:' The name you want to appear on emails that you send.
  • 'E-mail Address:' Your UWA Student Email address (ie. 12345678@student.uwa.edu.au).
  • 'Password:' Your Pheme password.

Ensure the 'Remember password' box is checked.

Click Continue.

Step three

Under the Server Settings section, choose 'IMAP' from the drop down box next to 'Incoming'.

Step 4

Enter the following settings:

  • Incoming Server Hostname: imap.gmail.com
  • Incoming Port: 993
  • Outgoing Server Hostname: smtp.gmail.com
  • Outgoing Port: 465
  • In both the SSL drop down menus, select 'SSL/TLS'.
  • In both the Authentication drop down menus, select 'Normal password'.

Click Done.

Thunderbird should now start downloading your emails.
