Configure Outlook 2013 for student email

Check IMAP is enabled

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Click on the cog icon at the top right corner of the mailbox and choose 'Settings' from the drop down menu.
  3. Click 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'.
    IMAP is enabled
  4. Select 'Enable IMAP'.
  5. Select 'Save Changes'.

Enabling Less Secure Apps

Before setting up your email program you will need to enable 'Less Secure Apps' using the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Go to the 'Less secure apps' settings page. Please note that this link will take you to an external website.
  3. Select the 'Turn on' radio button.

While some desktop clients don't follow all modern security standards, the risk is minimal when you are a savvy internet user. Please contact BYOD for further information.

Configuring Outlook 2013

Step one

Open Outlook.

If you've already set up an email account on Outlook: Click 'File'.

Step 1

Then click 'Add Account'.

Step 1

If you've never set up an email account on Outlook: Check the 'Yes' option.

Step 1.1

Click 'Next'.

The select the option 'Manual setup or additional server types'.

Step 1.2

Click 'Next'.

Selct the option 'POP or IMAP'.

Step 1.3

Click 'Next'.

Step two

Enter the following details:

Step 2.1 

User Information

  • Enter the name you want to appear on your emails in the 'Your Name' field
  • Enter your student email address in the 'Email address' field. Your student email address is your student number '@student.uwa.edu.au'

Server Information

  • Select 'IMAP' as the 'Account Type'
  • Type 'imap.gmail.com' into the 'Incoming mail server' field
  • Type 'smtp.gmail.com' into 'Outgoing mail server (smtp)' field

Logon Information

  • Ensure your 'User Name' is your UWA Student Email address, not just your student number
  • Enter your Pheme password in the 'Password' field
  • Ensure the 'Remember password' box is ticked
  • Ensure the 'Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)' box is left unticked

Click the 'More Settings…' button. Do not click 'Next' yet.

Step three

In the Mail Account box type a name for your email account eg. UWA Student Email.

Step 3.1

Select the Outgoing Server tab.

Check the box next to 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' and select 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'.
Step 3.2

Select the Advanced tab.

Step 3.3

For both 'Use the following type of encrypted connection' select SSL.

For the Outgoing server (SMTP) box enter 465.

Click 'OK'.

Step four

Back on the page where you entered your account details, click 'Next'.

Wait for the test to run. After receiving 'Congratulations! All tests completed successfully', click 'Close'.

Step 4.1
 

Click 'Finish'.

Step 4.2

You are done! Outlook 2013 should now start downloading your emails.
