Configure Apple Mail for student email

To access your UWA Student Email through Apple Mail, you will need IMAP enabled.

Check IMAP is enabled

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Click on the cog icon at the top right corner of the mailbox and choose 'Settings' from the drop down menu.
  3. Click 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'.

  4. Select 'Enable IMAP'.
  5. Select 'Save Changes'.

Enabling Less Secure Apps

Before setting up your email program you will need to enable 'Less Secure Apps' using the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your UWA Student Email via the webmail.
  2. Go to the 'Less secure apps' settings page. Please note that this link will take you to an external website.
  3. Select the 'Turn on' radio button.

While some desktop clients don't follow all modern security standards, the risk is minimal when you are a savvy internet user. Please contact BYOD for further information.

Configuring Apple Mail

Step one

Open Apple Mail.

If this is your first time using Apple Mail the account creation window will open automatically.

If not, click 'Mail', and select 'Preferences...' then open the 'Accounts' tab and click the plus sign (+) along the bottom to add a new account.

Enter your name, email and password
  • Enter your name in the 'Full Name' field.
  • Enter your student email address in the 'Email Address' field. Your student email address is your student number '@student.uwa.edu.au'.
  • Enter your Pheme password in the 'Password' field.

Click 'Continue'.

Step two

On the 'Incoming Mail Server' page, enter the following settings:

Enter the incoming mail server details
  • Select 'IMAP' as the account type.
  • Enter 'UWA Student Email' as the 'Description'
  • Type 'imap.gmail.com' into the Incoming Mail Server field.
  • Ensure the 'Username' is your UWA Student Email address, not just your student number.
  • Enter your Pheme password in the 'Password' field.

Click 'Continue'

Step three

On the 'Outgoing Mail Server' page, enter the following details:

Enter the outgoing mail server details
  • Type 'smtp.gmail.com' into the 'Incoming Mail Server' field.
  • Tick 'Use Authentication'.
  • Ensure the 'Username' is your UWA Student Email Address, not just your student number.
  • Enter your Pheme password in the 'Password' field.

Click 'Continue'

Step four

Check that the details on the 'Account Summary' page are correct:

  • Ensure 'SSL' is 'on' for both the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers.

Click 'Create'. Your mail should now begin downloading in Apple Mail.
