Chat for students

Further information

  • Pheme

The student webmail has a chat feature which enables you to have instant conversations with your friends and colleagues.

Please note, the University of Western Australia does not recognise chat as an official channel of communication.

When logged into your webmail the chat feature will appear in the bottom left corner of your inbox. If someone you don't recognise tries to chat with you, you will see their email address as their chat name. You can accept or reject their invitation to chat. If you accept their invitation, they will appear in your chat widget and you will be able to see their online status in the future.

You can start up a conversation with a friend or colleague, or another Gmail user if they are online - you just need to find them by clicking Add Contact.

You can choose to either chat "on record" or "off record". If you choose "on record", Google saves the conversation as an email into your inbox. Choose "off record" if you do not want a saved record of the conversation.
