What is information literacy?

Information literate individuals can:

  • recognise when and how much information is needed
  • know how information is organised
  • effectively access and evaluate information
  • manage information
  • understand economic, legal, social and cultural issues in the use of information
  • use information in such a way that others can learn from them

(Based on CAUL Information Literacy Standards 2003)

Why is information literacy essential?

Learning to use information effectively is a key part of a university education and underpins many of the UWA Education Principles that UWA students are encouraged to develop.

Information literacy strategy statement

The Information Literacy Strategic Directions Statement identifies the guiding principles for information literacy at UWA Library, the rationale that lies behind these principles, and sets out some brief points that identify how these principles can be taken forward.
