Understanding your search results
Relevance ranking
Keyword search results are grouped and ranked by relevance. Relevance ranking is determined by where your search word or phrase appears in the catalogue record.
Results appear in 5 groups: Most Relevant; Highly Relevant; Very Relevant; Relevant; and Other Relevant. Within each relevance group, titles are sorted by date, with the most recent appearing first.
Most Relevant
The search word or phrase appears in the main title. E.g. In a keyword search of the phrase genetic engineering the titles Genetic engineering or Genetic engineering in the plant sciences are considered Most Relevant as the search phrase occurs in the main title. |
Highly Relevant
The search word or phrase appears in the subtitle or other title information. E.g. In a keyword search of the phrase genetic engineering the title, Principles of gene manipulation: an introduction to genetic engineering is considered Highly Relevant as the search phrase occurs in the subtitle. |
Very Relevant
The search word or phrase appears in the subject, contents or summary. E.g. In a keyword search of the phrase genetic engineering the title An engineering introduction to biotechnology is considered Very Relevant as the search phrase appears as one of the subject headings. The title Medical ethics would appear because the search phrase occurs in the contents notes. The title Science at the bar: law, science and technology would appear because the search phrase occurs in the summary notes. |
Relevant
Words from the search phrase appear, although not together, in the title/subtitle. E.g. In a keyword search of the phrase genetic engineering the title Genetic algorithms in engineering and computer science is considered Relevant because the two words which make up the phrase occur, but not together, in the title/subtitle. |
Other Relevant
Words from the search phrase appear, although not together, elsewhere in the catalogue record. E.g. In a keyword search of the phrase genetic engineering the title Computational algorithms for fingerprinting is considered as Other Relevant because the two words which make up the phrase occur, but not together, somewhere in the contents notes, summary or subject. |
Sorting the search result
You can sort your results by date or alphabetically by title. Please note though that this will sort the complete results set. Relevancy rankings are no longer displayed once the results are resorted.
