Orientation

The HSS Library together with the Business Library offer orientation sessions for the Reid Library at the beginning of each semester. The 45 minute sessions include a short tour of the Library, an explanation of Library services and a hands-on session in the Library Training Room where students are introduced to the Library catalogue.

Students can sign up for these sessions at the Reid Information Centre on the first floor of the Reid Library in the first week of each semester.

IRIS

All students (including those in upper level units) who are newly enrolled in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences will be automatically enrolled in IRIS, or Introductory Research and Information Skills (COMM 2000).
The result of a close collaboration by the Faculty and the HSS Library, IRIS is a zero point unit within the Faculty. From 2007, students must complete IRIS within their first semester of enrolment.

IRIS is an introductory program that will provide beginning students with a foundation in generic research skills so that they can locate, evaluate and effectively use information. It provides a basis for the further development of information literacy skills in discipline-specific contexts in upper level units.

After completing IRIS students will be able to:

  • Define an essay topic so that they can recognise a need for information and determine the nature and extent of the information required.
  • Find and select resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Evaluate resources, critically evaluate information and the information seeking process.
  • Organise, manage and present information.

Upper level units

The HSS Library offer individual classes for all upper level units. These are tailored to the specific requirements of unit coordinators and can be conducted in a variety of formats. They can range from a short presentation as part of a normal lecture, a 45 minute session in tutorials, online content including research skills activities or bibliographic exercises designed for specific essay topics.

Because many upper level students will have completed IRIS, these classes can be more subject focused and introduce more advanced skills such as searching subject specific databases.

Contact the librarians in the HSS Library if you would like to include an information literacy skills component in any of your units.
