Internet Access via ITS

Library home > This page

Information Technology Services (ITS) offer all UWA staff and students access to the Internet. ITS provides the ability to send and receive email, surf the World Wide Web and dial in from home. You can also access resources made available only to computers connected to the UWA Network, and which are not made available via the UWA Library's authenticated access service.

You may use one of two alternatives:

Obtain and dial into a ITS "full service" account

Undergraduate students

The email account that is automatically assigned upon enrollment provides basic email facilities only. An upgrade to a "full service" account is required if you wish to:

  • dial in from home
  • use Library computers and the computers in some departmental laboratories
  • use the SNAP (Student Network Access Project) facilities
  • access the internet from the Colleges

More detailed information on how to upgrade to a "full service" account and dial in from home is provided on the ITS Web site.

Postgraduate students

Postgraduate students should approach their department to see if they can obtain sponsored student internet access. A "full service" account obtained from ITS is still required (see the information for undergraduates, above.)

Staff

Should staff want Internet access in addition to their departmental access they should apply for a Cyllene account.

More detailed information on staff Internet access can be found on the ITS Web site.

Departmental accounts are available from Electrical Engineering, Maths, and the Business School. These departmental accounts can be used instead of the UCS accounts.

A warning for clients outside the Perth metropolitan area!

Direct dial-up connection to the UWA network from outside the Perth metropolitan area will be charged at STD rates. If you are a remote client you should consider subscribing to a commercial service provider that maintains a "point-of-presence" local to you.

Use the ITS authenticated proxy

Note that from 2001 the University Library introduced an authenticated access service which provides a similar, but more straight-forward service than the ITS authenticated proxy.

For UWA staff without Cyllene accounts and students that do not wish to upgrade to a "full service" ITS student account there is an alternative: the ITS authenticated proxy. This allows you to "funnel" Web sites through the authenticated proxy even though you are dialled in to your commercial Internet service provider. Because you are connected to the ITS proxy you will be granted access to the IP-masked services served directly from the UWA Library (i.e. WebSPIRS databases). This does not include IP-masked services available on the Internet and offered via the Library, i.e. electronic journals. More detailed information is provided on the ITS Web site.

Note that some commercial Internet service providers and employers may require you use only their proxy server. If this is the case then you will be unable to use this service.
