Access

Library computers are available for use by authorised users of the Library during the Library's opening hours.

Access to Library computers is authenticated. Both staff and students should log on using their UWA number and Library barcode. A guest account is provided for users other than UWA staff and students.

  • UWA staff have unrestricted access to services and resources available on the World Wide Web.
  • UWA students have unrestricted access to library resources and selected Web sites. UWA students can access other Web sites by entering their Information Technology Services "full service" student account details when prompted (ITS net usage guidelines apply).
  • Guests have unrestricted access to library resources and selected Web sites only.

Software

Library computers are IBM-compatible PCs running the Windows operating system. Library computers are Internet-enabled machines installed with a Web browser to access the World Wide Web. Various helper applications are also installed, primarily those which a client may reasonably require in order to carry out their University-related duties or studies. For example, in 2008 this software includes:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser
  • Microsoft Office 2007 with Publisher
  • EndNote X1
  • SciFinder Scholar
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Shockwave Viewer
  • Flash Viewer
  • QuickTime Player
  • Media Player

Note: This list is subject to change as the needs of the majority of clients changes, and the software itself develops.

Library computers can read from CD-ROM's, USB devices and floppy discs and can save to USB devices and floppy discs.

Web Browsers

Some features of the Library Web site have been enhanced using Dynamic HTML and may only be available using modern browsers with JavaScript enabled (eg greater than version 4 of Netscape and Internet Explorer). To get the best functionality when Web browsing from your home or work we recommend that you regularly upgrade your browser to the latest available for your operating system.

University staff are recommended to consult their department's technical staff before upgrading their Web browsing software.
