Advising your postgraduates

Encourage your new postgraduate students to make an appointment with their reader services librarian for a personal consultation. You are welcome to accompany them!

Check that your students have a copy of the Library's publication: Library services for postgraduate and honours students. A new edition appears at the beginning of each year.

Library Web site

The Library Web site provides access to catalogues, databases, electronic journals. Web sites and to online Library services. It also gives detailed information about the Library. The address is http://www.library.uwa.edu.au/

There is additional information about Library services for postgraduate students in the Library Services (Other Services) section of the Library Web site.

Information skills seminars

Each subject library has an extensive programme of information skills seminars and classes for postgraduates. Individual instruction is also available. The information skills programme is widely publicized around the University. Contact your reader services librarian for details.

Document delivery and inter-library loans

Postgraduates may request articles and books from other libraries and suppliers through the Document Delivery Service. The cost is met from the annual Library allocation to faculties for document delivery and inter-library loans. Costs of individual items may vary from $6 to more than $30.

Postgraduates will need to register with the Library in order to submit requests electronically. The registration form is available on the Library Services section of the Library Web site.

Book purchases

Postgraduates cannot directly submit recommendations for book purchases. They may suggest new purchases to their subject librarian, or ask a member of the academic staff to submit a recommendation on their behalf.

Study accommodation

Some accommodation for postgraduates, in the form of shared study rooms (carrels) and personal desks, is available in the Reid Library building. Application forms are available from the Scholars' Centre or from the Library Services (Other services  > Library Facilities) section of the Library Web site.

There is also a postgraduate room in the Medical and Dental library.

Computing facilities

Students can read their UWA email from computers in all Library buildings.

Loans

Postgraduate research students may borrow an unlimited number of items from the main collection. Loans are normally until the end of the semester, unless the item is recalled.

Current awareness

The Library provides a range of electronic current awareness services. Ask your reader services librarian for details and instruction.

Thesis binding and submission

PhD and Master's theses in temporary binding should be submitted at the Postgraduate Research and Scholarships Office. Postgraduates enrolling from 2003 must also submit an electronic copy of their thesis for the UWA Library's Digital thesis Repository.
