There are a growing number of free web tools which have been developed especially for busy health professionals. Their characteristics are a simple, easy to use interface, and the facility to search simultaneously across many evidence-based sources. They provide an idea of the availablity of the evidence based literature in an area, and may be a useful starting point for your research.

  • SEEK – Sheffield Evidence for Effectiveness and Knowledge

SEEK is an EBM Gateway maintained by Sheffield University (UK).

  • SUMSearch

SUMSearch queries a number of key databases, such as Medline, DARE and National Guidelines Clearinghouse. Aims to select appropriate sources, format the search query, modify the query if too many or too few hits are found, and return a single set of results to the searcher.

  • TRIP database – Turning Research Into Practice

TRIP provides an interface to query Cochrane abstracts, PubMed, evidence based reviews, articles, statements and guidelines. Accesses over 50 sources of EBM information and also provides links to the Internet. Maintained by the Gwent Health Authority in the UK.
