When you install EndNote X1 with Word 2007 follow the instructions on screen and accept the default options, using the EndNote configuration utility to configure EndNote components. Once finished you should see a message indicating that EndNote has been successfully installed, the EndNote tab is added in and EndNote commands are available from the ribbon.

EndNote 9 and EndNote X1 libraries are compatible however EndNote 7 and earlier versions are not. You should ensure that any authors with whom you're collaborating are using a version of EndNote and Word compatible with your own. For further detailed information see the relevant sections of the EndNote Manual at EndNote site support and manuals.
