Locating information about landscape architecture

The EDFAA reference collection

The specialised dictionaries and encyclopedias in the EDFAA Reference Collection can provide you with definitions and introductory information. Some useful items include:

Finding books, studies, reports

To find books about an architect or a concept (e.g. sustainable cities) in the UWA Library begin with a keyword search in the UWA Library Catalogue. As you are browsing through the list of books, look at the Subject Headings listed in each catalogue entry. Click on the links to relevant Subject Headings.

Most landscape architecture books are in the area 712 (or Q712) on the shelves. Books on Australian landscape architecture are under 712.0994 (or Q712.0994).

Books on environmental design are mainly in 711 and 720 - 729 (or Q711 and Q720 - 729) areas.

Journal articles

To find journal articles about an architect, site or environmental issues you will need to look in sources that index journal articles by subject. These indexes are available via SuperSearch on the UWA Library web site.

The EDFAA Librarian can advise you on choosing the appropriate indexes for you assignment topic and provide instruction on using indexes. Some useful indexes include;

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals Covers architecture in its broadest sense including archaeology, historic preservation, decorative arts, interior decoration, furniture, landscape architecture and urban planning and environmental studies.
Australian Architecture Database (ARCH) Indexes articles from materials held by the Stanton Library, North Sydney Council. Subject coverage includes articles on Australian architects, architecture, building, interior design and landscape architecture.
Australian Heritage Bibliography Series Indexes articles on Australia's natural and cultural environment. Subject coverage includes national parks, endangered species, coasts, forests, wetlands, rivers, geological features, wilderness areas, world heritage sites, aboriginal rock art sites, ceremonial grounds and sacred sites, important historical and archaeological sites,  historic buildings and structures and historic towns and precincts.
Geobase Covers worldwide research literature in physical and human geography, earth and environmental sciences, ecology, and related disciplines from 1980 to the present.
CAB Abstracts Indexes articles in agriculture, forestry, ecology, natural resources and applied sciences from 1973 to present.
Agricola

Covers journal literature in the area of agriculture and related sciences from 1970 to present.

 Your search should result in a list of journal articles on your topic. To locate the articles, click on the Find it button against each entry.

Internet Resources

There are Internet resources that can provide you information about landscape architecture. In particular, the internet can be a useful resource for finding information about current projects. For local information check the Western Australian Planning Commission, for general information check the About.com page on Architecture

Locating plans and images of buildings and gardens

This information can be found in a variety of places.

Books and journal articles often contain images or plans of a building and its surroundings.

You may be able to locate images or plans of a building on the Internet. For example, for images in history of landscape architecture, starting from ancient times, see "Landscape History".

Advisory notes/Royal Australian Institute of Architects, practice services - a collection of practice and advisory notes for practising architects. It is available on CD-ROM. Ask at the EDFAA Inquiry Desk.

Australian Standards/Standards Association of Australia - Provides the full text of all standards produced by Standards Australia. It is available on the Library web site.

Building code of Australia online - full text of the Building code of Australia 1996, vols 1 & 2. You can search by keyword. It is available on the Library web site.

BDP Environment design guide - a comprehensive online source of information on environmental issues tailored to the needs of Australia's building design professional It is available on the Library web site.

Neuferts architects' data - this is an essential reference for the initial design and planning of a building project. It is available in the EDFAA Reference Collection at R721.0212 2000 ARC.
