The Library is structured into two divisions - Reader Services and Information Systems - each led by an Associate Librarian.
Reader Services division
The Reader Services Division comprises nine subject libraries and 77 members of staff.
The Reid Library building is situated at the centre of the main campus at Crawley and houses the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, the Business Library, the Map Collection and the Scholars' Centre. Also on the main campus are the Music Library, the Law Library and the Science Library. Two libraries, the Education Fine Arts and Architecture Library and the Medical and Dental Library, are located off the main Crawley campus. The Medical and Dental Library is housed on the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital complex.
Information Systems division
The Information Systems division of the Library comprises three sections each headed by its own manager. The three sections are Administration, Information Resources Access Management and Information Technology.
The Administration section is responsible for finance, human resources, staff training and development, physical resources, space planning, occupational safety and health and security within the Library. It operates the Librarys copying and printing services.
The Information Resources Access Management section is responsible for the acquisition and bibliographic control of information resources in all formats. It comprises four units:
- Monographs Access Management is responsible for the acquisition cataloguing and processing of monographs and non-book resources and the maintenance and
quality control of the catalogue and other in-house databases. - Serials Access Management is responsible for all aspects of the acquisition cataloguing and processing of serials and electronic resources maintenance and
quality control of check-in records and electronic links and for all co-ordination and quality control of binding. - Budget and Planning is responsible for all aspects of the management of the Librarys information resources budget including access to high
quality selection tools. It is proactive in maximising the effective use of the available budget to secure access to the widest possible range of information
resources to support the universitys teaching learning and research. -
Digital Repositories
The Information Technology section is responsible for the efficient and effective operation and support of all the Librarys computer systems and networks including the Library Web site. The University has a highly devolved structure for its information technology services and as a result the Library's IT section has responsibility for the complete range of IT services offered by the Library.
Senior Management of the Library
The University Librarian, Associate Librarian (Information Systems) and Associate Librarian (Reader Services) form the Library Executive. Each participates in University and external activities and committees in line with responsibilities interests and expertise. The Executive meets fortnightly.
The Section Heads meet fortnightly in the Library Briefing Forum to share information. They also meet as the Librarian's Consultative Group from time to time to consider policy issues. Each Division has regular meetings of its section heads.
Extensive use is made of cross-sectional and cross-divisional working groups. Some of these are permanent while others are ad hoc groups brought together to work on a particular project. In this way some flexibility is introduced across the functional boundaries.
