Patrick White (1912-1990), Australia's only Nobel Laureate for Literature, wrote an extensive body of literature including prose fiction, poetry, short fiction and drama. Most of his early life was spent in England, but he returned to Australia permanently in 1948. His works deal with social and political issues as well with more abstract and personal themes, but his reponse to his native Australia was a highly ambivalent one.
