Katharine Susannah Prichard : The Eastern European Connection

Library home > This page

Katharine Susannah Prichard (1883-1969) was one of Australia's most controversial novelists, best known for Coonardoo (1929) - probably the first realistic literary portrait of an Aboriginal woman. Prichard, who lived in Perth from 1919, was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia and continued to promote the Communist cause for the rest of her life.

Most of her novels reflect her political views, particularly the trilogy set in the Western Australian goldfields: The Roaring Nineties (1946), Golden Miles (1948), and Winged Seeds (1950).

Many of her novels were published in translation in the Communist countries of Eastern Europe during the 1950s. The Australian Literature Collection includes a range of these editions, which are now comparatively rare. They were presented to the Library by the author, and several are signed by her.
